Cold-formed C purlins are structural steel profiles manufactured by roll-forming galvanized steel strip at room temperature into a C-shaped section with return lips. They are widely used as secondary structural members in steel building systems, primarily for roof purlins and wall girts. Q235B carbon steel is a commonly used material grade.
1. Lightweight and High Strength
The optimized C-shaped cross-section with return lips provides efficient structural performance while reducing steel consumption. Compared with conventional hot-rolled channel sections, C purlins can weigh approximately 25%–30% less under comparable load-bearing requirements, depending on the section design and engineering conditions. Their lightweight construction can reduce roof loads and help optimize the costs of primary beams and foundations.
2. Fully Automated Cold Roll Forming with High Dimensional Accuracy
Automated roll-forming ensures consistent dimensions, straight profiles and minimal twisting. Clean-cut edges, factory pre-punching and cut-to-length services allow for convenient on-site bolted assembly, reducing secondary cutting and grinding work.
3. Easy Installation and Versatile Applications
The symmetrical C-section facilitates flexible installation. The flat web provides a convenient surface for fastening metal roofing sheets, supporting service lines and mounting ventilation equipment. Standardized fittings and connection methods help simplify installation and improve construction efficiency.
4. Flexible Corrosion Protection Options
Galvanized C Purlins: A cost-effective choice for conventional steel workshops, warehouses and other general building applications.
Enhanced Corrosion Protection: Hot-dip galvanized or other suitable protective systems can be considered for more demanding corrosive environments, subject to project requirements.
5. Space-Saving Storage and Cost-Effective Transportation
The profiles can be nested and stacked to improve loading efficiency and make better use of transport space, helping reduce shipping and handling costs.
6. Fast Assembly with Bolted Connections
C purlins are commonly installed using bolted connections, supporting dry construction without on-site welding for standard connection designs. When supplied together with compatible color-coated steel roofing sheets and related accessories, they help streamline procurement and accelerate building-envelope installation.
7. Lightweight Handling and Faster Installation
The relatively low weight makes the profiles easier to handle, lift and position on site. Combined with pre-punched holes and cut-to-length sections, they can help shorten roof and wall installation schedules.
8. Reduced Overall Structural Costs
Lightweight section design can help optimize the steel consumption of the overall structure when properly engineered. Factory-galvanized products can also reduce the need for additional on-site rust removal and painting, depending on the specified coating system and service environment.
9. Multiple Specifications and Customized Lengths
A range of section sizes and thicknesses can be supplied to suit different structural requirements. Customized lengths and factory pre-punching help minimize on-site cutting and material waste.
10. Reliable Performance in Roof and Wall Systems
When properly designed and installed with compatible bracing, sag rods and connections, C purlins work together with metal roofing and wall cladding to form an effective building-envelope support system. Appropriate structural design and fastening are essential for wind resistance and overall stability.

Large-span or steep-slope roofs: Z purlins or other suitable structural sections may be more appropriate, depending on span, roof slope, continuity and loading conditions.
Heavy equipment support beams: C purlins are secondary structural members and should not be used as primary load-bearing beams for heavy equipment unless specifically engineered and verified for the intended application.
Highly corrosive industrial environments: Standard galvanized steel strip may not provide sufficient long-term protection. A more suitable coating system or hot-dip galvanized product should be evaluated.
Applications with significant lateral or torsional instability risks: Appropriate bridging, sag rods, bracing and connection details are required.
C purlins are generally well suited to simple-span roof and wall framing systems. Their suitability for continuous spans, steep roof slopes and larger spans depends on the section dimensions, steel thickness, material properties, loading conditions and connection design.
For many conventional applications, spans of up to approximately 6 meters may be considered as an initial reference. This is not a universal design limit; the final allowable span must be verified through structural calculations.
To ensure reliable performance, the following factors should be considered during selection and installation:
Section depth, flange width, lip dimensions and steel thickness
Material grade and specified mechanical properties
Roof and wall loads, including wind uplift
Purlin spacing, span and support conditions
Bridging, sag rods and lateral restraint requirements
Bolt-hole positions and connection details
Galvanizing specifications and environmental exposure conditions
